Effective Use of IT

Consultant services all too often seek expensive a commitment before areas of client concern have been fully identified or specified and alternative ways forward considered.

The LSSA survey issued in February 2006 clearly demonstrates that although firms have made investment in IT the adoption and use throughout the practice often fall short. It sometimes tales the involvement of an experienced third party to assist in this process of ensuring return on investment often starting with education into the benefits of better use and removing some of the mysteries. IT frustration does not mean that there is a need to go through the hiatus of a system change. If the firm has one of the mainstream suppliers then often a solution can be found with a reassessment of objectives and issues.

Two areas not exploited sufficiently:

CRM Systems which can be an expensive investment by a firm are often underutilised and this is often mainly because of lack of buy in from the users who do not see the benefits. Improvements in marketing strategy, client development and retention programmes and new business programmes that can be aided by effective use of IT systems will make a difference. A clear usage policy by the firm also needs development. Please also see the PCC article on the subject of CRM systems.

HR Systems have developed tremendously over the last few years but again are underutilised particularly in the appraisal and competence management areas which when used effectively can cut a great deal of time by being on line, saving costs and being more effective in staff retention and development.
